Tring, Hertfordshire, and christened on the 2nd December 1770. John Goodson
married Frances FOSTER on the 23rd June
1794 in Tring, Hertfordshire. They had four children Charlotte (1796), Elizabeth
(1799), William (1801), and Benjamin
(1814).
On the 1841 census John lived alone in Wilstone, Tring and his occupation was listed as an agricultural labourer.

Born in Little Tring, Hertfordshire
in 1801 and christened on the 3rd May 1801. William married Maria
SMITH on the 16th December 1834. They had eight children Fanny
(1835), Martha (1839), Charles (1841), Edmund (1844), John (1846), James (1849),
Elizabeth (1851), and William (1854).
William worked as a canal pump engine driver alongside William and John Woodhouse in the Tringford pumping station on the Wendover Arm of the canal . Maria was a straw plaiter, as were all the children at a young age.
Their daughter Fanny married Francis Harrowell whose family lived next door at Canal Side, Little Tring. Martha married John Burr a hairdresser who lived at 5 Akeman Street, Tring. Edmund married Mary Ann Monk and my great grandfather William married Mary Ann Crawley/Brightman, see details further along. On the 1841 through to the 1871 census the family lived at 2 Canal Side, Little Tring, Hertfordshire.
William died on the 28th January 1878 in Little Tring, aged 66, of bright's disease (generic name for diseases of the kidneys), the informant was a Mary Proctor. As a widow on the 1881 census Maria was living with her niece Elizabeth Smith and grand-daughter Annie Harrowell in Little Tring, Hertfordshire.

Born in Little Tring, Hertfordshire on the 27th May 1854. William married Mary Ann CRAWLEY/BRIGHTMAN on the 14th August
1882 in St Matthew's Church, Pancras, Middlesex, their witnesses were Henry
and Ellen Hawkins. The address for both on the marriage certificate was 6 Cardington
Street, London.
They had five children William (1884), Charles (1885), Walter (1887), Florence (1892) and Louisa (1893). Sadly Louisa only lived until she was a month old.
William's occupation was a glass beveller and in his senior years was a public baths attendant.
William left Little Tring for London and on the 1881 census was living on his own at 44 Clarendon Street, Pimlico, London. On the 1891 census William and family were living at 181 Pentonville Road, Clerkenwell, London, and in 1893 at 101, Midhope Buildings, Whidborne Street, Islington, London. By 1901 the family were living at 68 Liverpool Road, Islington, London and in 1911 at 7 Cross Street, Islington, London.
On the 1911 census William's occupation was listed as a Glass Grinder, his son William as a Travellers Porter, Walter as a Jewel Case Finisher, and Florence as an Assistant in Glass Syphon Business.
William died on the 5th
August 1924, aged 70, at 77a Highgate Hill, London of chronic bronchitis and
cardiac weakness, the informant was his son William.

- Charles Goodson (1885 - 1969)
Born at 5 Gee Street, St Pancras,
London on the 27th July 1885. William married Clara
Margaret RICKETTS on the 26th July 1913 at the register office
in Southwark, London, their witnesses were F Ricketts and William Ricketts.
The address for both on the marriage certificate was 39 Alfreton Street, London.
They had three children Albert (1914), Clara Margaret (Clare) (1918) and Patricia Jean. As a family they lived at Portobello Road, Kensington, London and then 55 Bulstrode Road, Hounslow, Middlesex. When Charles was married his occupation was stated as a railway porter.
Charles joined the 1st Scottish Rifles 'Cameronians' on the 20th June 1906 in London aged 20 years and 11 months - regiment number 9314, and signed up for 9 years and 3 years in the reserved. Charles was discharged on the 5th January 1915, he served with honour in the great war and was discharged due to having been found no longer physically fit to for war service - I have no information on what happened to him during the war, but he was awarded the 1914 Star (instituted in 1917 for service ashore in France and Flanders between 5 August and 22 November 1914), the British War Medal (authorised in 1919 and was awarded to eligible service personnel and civilians alike), and the Victory Medal (awarded to all eligible personnel who served on the establishment of a unit). During the second world war Charles was a warden for the air raid precautions department in the borough of Heston and Isleworth.
Charles sadly died on the 3rd April 1969 of cerebral thrombosis at St Albans City Hospital, Normandy Road, St Albans and laid to rest at West Herts Crematorium.

Born on the 10th May 1818 in Shefford, Bedfordshire, John married Sarah CRAWLEY 1853 in Clerkenwell, London.
They had five children Mary (1851), John William (1857?), Henry (1860), Walter (1857), and John (1858). John's occupation was a shoe maker and Journeyman.
John was first living as a lodger with Sarah Crawley on the 1851 census with the Poulter family and Sarah's daughter Ellen Crawley (1845) from a previous marriage, at the Highlander Cottages, Hitchin, Hertfordshire. On the 1861 census John was living as a widower with his family, in Back Street, Hitchin, Hertfordshire.
John's daughter Mary Ann's birth certifcate states her surname as Crawley, but she was christened Brightman on the 7th August 1857 in St Mary's church, Hitchin along with her brother John William who was christened with the surname of Crawley Brightman.
John's wife Sarah died in 1861. John then married Caroline KNIGHTLEY, and they had five children Clara (1862), Charles (1866), Earnest (1869), Harry (1872) and Marian (1881). On the 1871 census John was living as a widower at 3 Radcliffe Road, Hitchin, Herts and on the 1881 census John was living with Caroline and family at 3 Radcliffe Road, Hitchin, Hertfordshire.

Thomas's occupation was a master bricklayer, employing six men and one boy. Thomas died on the 22nd June 1867 in Camberwell, Surrey, aged 64, of chronic bronchitis, the informant was Sarah Ricketts (daughter-in-law).

St Saviour, Surrey, their witnesses were Charles Delverlogan and Mary Ann Bull.
On the marriage certificate Charles gave his address as 37 Temple Street, Southwark
and Clara gave her address as 9 Boundary Row, London. Clara was a widow previously
married to George Skelton in 1879. They had six children Charles (1883), William
(1886?), Clara (1886), Florence (1889),
Walter (1891) and Daisy May (1894).
Charles's occupation was a bricklayer. On the 1891 census the family lived at 9 Boundary Row, Southwark, London and on the 1901 census at 9 Earls Cottages, Bermondsey, London.
Charles' son Walter was a private in the Royal Fusilers London regiment and died whilst serving in the first world war on the 28th March 1918. Walter is burried with honour in the Orchard Dump cemetery, Arleux-en-Gohelle, France.

London, their witnesses were F Ricketts and William Ricketts. The address for
both on the marriage certificate was 39 Alfreton Street, London; but prior to
marrying Charles, Clara lived at 87 Mina Road, Walworth, London. They had three
children Albert Edward (1915), Clara Margaret (Clare) (1918) and Patricia Jean
(1932). As a family they lived at Portobello Road, Kensington, London and then
55 Bulstrode Road, Hounslow, Middlesex.
Clara sadly died aged 73, on the 14th December 1959 of myocardical infarcation at 55 Bulstrode Road, Hounslow, Middlesex. She was laid to rest on the 18th December 1959 at South West Middlesex Crematorium, Hanworth, Middlesex.

Thomas's occupation was an attorney clerk. In 1841 through to 1870 the family lived at 2 Boddys Bridge, Christchurch, Surrey.
Thomas died on the 30th January 1870 at 2 Boddys Bridge, Christchurch, Surrey, aged 85, of senectus (old age), the informant was his wife Hannah Mary.

in 1790. John married Mary Ann (maiden name unknown, born 1791, Suffolk), and
they had four children (that I'm aware of) Walter
(1818), James (1821), Thomas (1828) and Henry (1831). In 1841 the
family lived in West Side Red Lion, Tower Hamlets, and in 1851 in Frederick
Place, Mile End, London. In 1861 John and Mary lived at 11 Fishmongers &
Poulterers Alms Houses, Wood Green, Tottenham, Middlesex.
John's occupation was a cheesemonger and poultry salesman. John and his son Walter were listed in the 1841 Trade's Directory under the poultry salesmen working at Leadenhall Market. John is also listed in the 1852 London Commercial Directory working at Frederick Place, Mile End Road, London. I believe John's father was also John Marsh a cheesemonger and poultry salesman, he was listed in the 1791 London Profession Directory, and as John Marsh Snr in the 1852 London Commercial Directory.
John's son Thomas also became a poultry salesman and is listed in various London Trade directories working at Ship Tavern Pass, Leadenhall Market and 220 Popular High Street, London, from 1882 up until 1915. In the listing from the 1915 London Post Office Directory they state the family business had been established over 100 years.
John died on the 18th May 1864 at 11 Fishmongers & Poulterers Alms House, Wood Green, aged 74, of anasarca (dropsy). Present at the death was Ann Hubbard of Finsbury Road, Wood Green. Mary Ann died on the 23rd March 1879 also at 11 Fishmongers & Poulterers Alms House, Wood Green, aged 88, of senectus (old age), present at the death was S C Mills of the same address.

- Walter John Marsh (1818 - 1885)
Born in Christchurch, Surrey
on the 7th April 1818, and christened on the 11th April 1819 at Saint John Horsleydowns,
Bermondsey, London. Walter married Mary Ann BAYS on
the 4th July 1840 at the Parish Church in St George in the East, Middlesex,
their witnesses were Robert Bays and Matilda Bays. On the marriage certificate
Walter gave his address as 10 Cannon Street Road, Christchurch and Mary Ann
gave her address as 10 Bedford Street, London. Walter and Mary Ann had eight
children Mary (1842), Matilda (1843), Susanna (1850), Frederick (1852), Henry
(1854), Alfred (1856), Walter (1858-1866), and Clara (1860).
Walter's occupation was a poultry salesman, and was listed in the 1841 Trade's Directory under the poultry salesmen working at Leadenhall Market, London, but went on to become a clerk to a butcher in his later years. On the 1841 census Walter, Mary Ann and her mother Margaret Bays lived at 30 Holmes Street (?), Tower Hamlets. On the 1861 census the family lived at 5 Gloucester Terrace, Bermondsey, Southwark, Surrey and on the 1881 census at 9 Boundary Row, Christchurch, Southwark.
In 1866 the family hit upon hard times and were living at 99 Nichol Square, Shoreditch, on the night of the 18th April Walter junior was taken ill and the police were called to the home. The younger children were found in a poor state of affairs and Walter junior was very weak, a doctor was called for, and the children were then removed to be taken to St Leonards Workhouse in Shoreditch. Sadly, Walter junior died just thirty hours after his admittance to the workhouse, early on the morning of the 20th April. Walter Marsh senior was tried and convicted of his manslaughter at the Old Bailey on the 11th June 1866, and was recommended to mercy by the jury and confined to nine months.
Shoreditch workhouse stands at the northern end of Hoxton Street and was built in 1863.
Walter died at 10 Boundary Row, Christchurch on the 11th March 1885, aged 66, of chronic bronchitis and asthma. The informant was his daughter Clara Ricketts who resided at 27 Stanton Street, Peckham, London.

RICKETTS a bricklayer on the 15th Janaury 1883 at St John's church
in St Saviour, Surrey, their witnesses were Charles Delverlogan and Mary Ann
Bull. On the marriage certificate Clara gave her address as 9 Boundary Row,

Born in London on the 13th July 1783 and
christened at St Swithin, London on the 3rd August 1783 (to be proven?). Robert
married Margaret BROWN in 1801 and they had seven children Robert John (1804), Francis, Henry, Matilda,
Alfred and Mary Ann (1817), Thomas (1819). In 1840 Robert
lived at 10 Bedford Street, Whitechapel Road, Middlesex.
Robert was a salesman working at Leadenhall Market, London, selling cheese, butter and eggs. I have some Old Bailey court proceeding records where on two occasions Robert was stolen from and on one occasion he was called as witness to a fraud banknote case - transcripts of these cases will appear on the web-site shortly.
Robert died at 10 Bedford Street on the 30th October 1840, aged 65, of asthma, the informant was Ann Bays of 13 Great Alie Street, Whitechapel. To view transcripts of both Robert Bays and his son Francis Bays last will and testament, please click here.
On the 1841 census Margaret Bays was living at 30 Holmes Street (?), Tower Hamlets with her daughter Mary Ann and her husband Walter Marsh. Margaret Bays died at 29 Warner Street, Southwark on the 5th January 1849, aged 73, of paralysis which she suffered from for 4 months, the informant was her daughter Matilda Reed.

gave his address as 10 Cannon Street Road, Christchurch.
Walter and Mary Ann had eight children Mary (1842), Matilda (1843), Susanna (1850), Frederick (1852), Henry (1854), Alfred (1856), Walter (1858), and Clara (1860). On the 1861 census the family lived at 5 Gloucester Terrace, Bermondsey, Southwark, Surrey.

and not born in Surrey. George Hall married Hannah Maria (maiden name unknown,
born approximately 1783, in Surrey) and they had five children (that I'm aware
of), Hannah (1804), William (1809), George
(1813), Edward (1821), and James (1822). On the 1841 census George, Hannah and
two of the son's Edward and James lived at 2 Boddys Bridge, Southwark, Surrey.
On the 1851 census Hannah lived alone at 18 Church Street, Alms Houses, Southwark,
Surrey.
George's is occupation was a barge builder of Bull Stairs, Bull Alley, and Boddys Bridge, Christchurch. All his son's also went into barge building as did Jame's son George and then later George's son James George became a lighterman.
George died in 1845 in St Saviour, Surrey.

On the 1841 census Jonas and his wife are living in Little Tring, Hertfordshire, neighbouring the property their daughter Maria and her family was living in. Jonas' occupation is listed as a painter.

Born in 1819, Hitchin, Hertfordshire, Sarah married her first husband Joseph CRAWLEY in 1837 in Hitchin, between them they had the one child, Ellen (1845). On the 1841 census they lived at Back Street, Hitchin with an Ann Poulter (relationship unknown). On the 1851 census Sarah was living with her daughter Ellen and John Brightman (a shoemaker) at the Highlanders Cottages, Hitchin with eight members of the Poulter family.
Joseph Crawley, Sarah's husband died in 1845.
In 1853 Sarah married John BRIGHTMAN in Clerkenwell, London. They had five children Mary (1851), John William (1857?), Henry (1860), Walter (1857), and John (1858). John's occupation was a shoe maker and Journeyman.
Sarah's daughter Mary Ann's birth certifcate states her surname as Crawley, but she was christened Brightman on the 7th August 1857 in St Mary's church, Hitchin along with her brother John William who was christened with the surname of Crawley Brightman.
Sarah died in 1861.

Born in 1789, Tring, Hertfordshire, John married his first wife Ann (maiden name unknown) on the 25th January 1772 in Tring. They had nine children, James (1783), William (1784), Sarah (1788-1865), Thomas (1788), Elizabeth (1789), Joseph (1791), Maria (1795), Luke (1800) and Lydia (1800).
John's first wife Ann died in 1821 and was burried on the 31st October 1821 in Tring, Hertfordshire, he then married Frances JUDGE on the 31st August 1822 in the parish church Tring.
John died in 1845 in Berkhamstead.
51 - Elizabeth Fitkin (1789 - ?)
Born in 1789 and christened on the 22nd November 1789, in Tring, Hertfordshire. Elizabeth married Jonas SMITH on the 25th July 1810 in Tring, Hertfordshire. They had two children which I am currently aware of Jonas and Maria
(1812).
On the 1841 census Elizabeth and Jonas were living in Little Tring, Hertfordshire, neighbouring the property their daughter Maria and her family was living in. Jonas' occupation is listed as a painter.
