9 - Phoebe Davis (31st March 1872 - ?)
It is unknown where Phoebe was born, our only known information about her was found in the Wandsworth Workhouse records. It was recorded that she had been living in several boarding houses; McKies Lodging House, Surrey Lane, Battersea for about a month, White's Lodging House, Rope Yard Rails, Woolwich for a week or two, and then Burkes Lodging House off and on for about 6 months up until the 7th April 1899 when she arrived at the workhouse. Phoebe stated that her parents were gypsies and had lived in caravans, never having a fixed home that she can remember. Six years earlier on Hastings Heath Phoebe had given birth to a child (male) which had sadly died at the age of three weeks. After this she ran away from home to be with her eldest sister. It seems her sister gave birth to a child five years earlier but she had died a week after the child was born, this child (believed to be male, name unknown) arrived with Phoebe at the workhouse on the 7th April 1899.

On the 6th May 1899 Phoebe gave birth to her son John Hughes Davis at the workhouse in Wandsworth and he was baptised on the 18th May 1899. On John's birth certificate Phoebe stated that she was a flower hawker and gave her address as 11, Point Pleasant, Wandsworth, London. Phoebe left the workhouse on the 20th May 1899 leaving her newly born son and her sister's child behind (I would think believing they would have a better life) and so far I have not been able to locate any further information about her.

4 - John Hughes Davis (6th May 1899 - 13th December 1963)
Born in the Union Workhouse, Swaffield Road, off Garratt Lane, Wandsworth, London. John's birth certificate states that his name was simply John Davis; it always confused me where the Hughes reference came from, it was not until I discovered the Wandsworth workhouse records that this came to light. On each occasion his name was registered it was entered as 'John Davis see Hughes' and 'John Hughes see Davis'. My only conclusion is that they thought the child that his mother had brought into the workhouse just prior to John's birth was his brother and his surname was Hughes.

In 1870 the union workhouses were granted funds to pay for education and the use of state schools for workhouse children became the general rule. Despite extensive research of the Wandsworth workhouse records, I can find no entry concerning which school or other institution John was transferred to after leaving the infirmary.

John married Edith Ivy STOKES on the 9th February 1924 at the register office in Brentford, Middlesex, and their witnesses were F E Stokes (Edith's mother) and M A Wells. John was then a Private in the 2nd Battalion Border Regiment 3589728 based at the Army Vocational Training Centre, Hounslow, Middlesex.

John and Edith lived at 2 George Street, Hounslow, Middlesex and had seven children, Lilly, John, Doris, Lenny, Albert, Marie and Robert.
