During my research I have discovered the wills of Robert Bays (1783-1840), his son
Francis Bays, Richard Batt (1715-1796), Ann Roberts Bays and John Marsh
all of which are transcribed below.
Will
of Robert Bays (1783-1840)
This is the last will and
testament of me Robert Bays of no. 10 Bedford Street, Whitechapel Road in the
county of Middlesex, gentlemen. I give and bequeath unto my dear wife Margaret
Bays all my household furniture and fixtures. I desire the remainder of my ____
personal property to be sold by my executors hereafter named and the proceeds
of such sale after discharging all my just debts funeral and testamentary expenses
to be divided equally between my son Francis Bays of no. 57 Blackfriars Road
in the county of Surrey, cheesemonger, Henry Bays of Leadenhall Market in the
city of London, salesmen, Matilda Bays of Leadenhall Market, spinster, Alfred
Bays of no. 45 Goswell Road in the county of Middlesex, cheesemonger, Mary Ann
Marsh wife of Walter Marsh of Leadenhall Market in the city of London, poulterer,
also Thomas Bays of Leadenhall Market brother to the above. And I hereby appoint
Francis Bays of 57 Blackfriars Road in the county of Surrey, cheesemonger and
Walter Marsh of Leadenhall Market in the city of London, poulterer, executors
of this my last will and testament in witness whereof I have hereunto set and
subscribed my hand and seal this twenty fifth day of the Oct one thousand eight
hundred and forty. Robert Bays. Signed and sealed by the testator Robert Bays

Uppeared personally John Thomas Giles of no. 13 Bedford Street, Stepney in the
county of Middlesex and made oath and deposed that he is a subscribed witness
to the last will and testament of Robert Bays late of no. 10 Bedford Street,
Whitechapel Road in the county of Middlesex, gentlemen deceased now hereunto
and assisted and beginning thus. This is the last will and testament of me Robert
Bays aiding thus subscribes my hand and seal this twenty fifth day of Oct one
thousand eight hundred and forty and thus subscribed Robert Bays and the lastly
made oath that the said deceased executed the said will on the day of the date
thereof by signing his name at the foot of and thereof on the presence of this
deponent and Frederick William Clarence the other subscribed witness to the
said will both of whom were present at the same time and that this -deponent
and the said Frederick William Clarence thereupon respectively attested and
subscribed the said will in the presence of the said testator. John Thomas Giles
on the 23rd day of November 1840 the said John Thomas Giles was only sworn to
the truth of this affidavit before me A F Bayford here present, J _________

Proved at London the 30th Nov 1840 before the worshipful Augustus Frederick Bayford of laws and surrogate by the oaths of Francis Bays the son and Walter Marsh the executors to whom admin was granted having been first sworn duly to us.
Will
of Francis Bays
This is the last will and testament of me Francis Bays late of Blackfriars Road
in the County of Surrey, Cheesemonger but now of Bolton Place, Albert Street,
Newington in the said County of Surrey, gentlemen. I brief my executors hereafter
named to pay all my just debts punctual and testamentary expenses. I give and
bequeath unto my dear brother Thomas Bays the sum of Ten pounds sterling to
and for his own absolute use and benefit. I give and bequeath unto my sister
Mary Ann Marsh the wife of Walter Marsh the like sum of Ten pounds sterling
to and for her own and absolute use and benefit and I direct and declare that
the said legacies herein before given and bequeath that shall be paid within
Three calendar months after my decease. I give devise and bequeath unto my dear
wife Lydia Bays all my freehold and leasehold property whatsoever and wheresoever,
all my money in stocks or funds, debts due on mortgage or otherwise authorities
for money, household, furniture and effects and all other the rest residue and
remainder of my estate property and effects whatsoever and wheresoever real
and personal on which I may be seized possessed of interests in or entitled
unto at the time of my decease whether in possession, revision, remainder or
expentaury to hold the same unto my said dear wife Lydia Bays her heirs executor
administrators and assists (?) absolutely according to the natures and treasures
thereof. Respectively I hereby nominate to institute and appoint my said dear
wife Lydia Bays sole executor of this my will. I hereby revoke all prior and
other wills and so declare this to be and sustain my last will and testament
on witness whereof. I have to this my last will and testament set my hand and
seal this Twenty Fifth day of March in the year of our lord One Thousand Eight

the said testator Francis Bays as and for his last will and testament in the
presence of us who in his presence his bequest and in the presence of each other
all being present at the same time have here unto subscrided our names as witnesses

Francis Bays of No 2a Albert Street, Penton Place Newington, Batts declare this to be a codicil to my last will and testament bearing date the Twenty Fifth of March One Thousand Eight Hundred and Fifty Two and hereby confirm the said will except in so far as the said will may be revoked by the present codicil by the following _____ mainly should it please me Francis Bays and my dear wife Lydia Bays of our lives at the same time by accident or by the will of God in the event of it so happening of therein evoke the whole of the aforesaid will stated as aforesaid but not otherwise by the present codicil I direct my executors hereafter named to have our body’s interred in the Norwood cemetery and to pay all just debts, funeral and testamentary expenses. I give and bequeath unto my nephew Robert Bays my watch and chain to be given to him at the age of sixteen years. I give and bequeath to Thomas Goldsworthy Sutton of No. 2 Bales Cottages, Wandsworth Road the _____ works by Emma Dowsing of our saviour and the likeness of Emma Dowsing and child. I also give to the aforesaid Thomas G Sutton in a trust for Emma Dowsing the brooch containing my likeness. I request my executors to ____ the bill for £100 contained in my private lodge given to me by Henry Louis Dowsing. I also request my executors to _____ the bill ______ on Thomas G Sutton for £50 _____ Oct 21 1853. I give and bequeath unto my brother Thomas Bays of No. 80 Cross Street, Blackfriars Road a Cheesemonger the whole interest of lease in the house No. 2a Albert Street, parish of Newington, County of Surrey and the whole of my furniture and effects of every description contained therein except the aforesaid pictures and brooch for his own absolute use and benefit. I hold in trust for my sister Matilda Reed the sum of One Hundred and Thirty Two pounds Eighteen shillings and Ten pence which sum I request to my executors to hold for this absolute use and benefit. I give and bequeath the remainder of my property namely my interest in the mortgage of the house in Edward Street. Money in the funds London and Westminster bank freehold land ___________ and all other property of _____ ______ possessed of the particulars of which will be found in my private lodge to be divided equally between Thomas Goldsworthy Sutton of No. 2 Bales Cottages, Wandsworth Road and Emma Dowsing wife of Henry Louis Dowsing of Adelaide or some other place in South Australia formally of English state and share alike. Proved at London with a codicil 24th May 1854 before the worshipful Thomas Spinks Dortoe of laws and surrogate by the oath of Lydia Bays widow the relict the sole executor to whom admin was granted having been first sworn duly to administer.
Will
of Richard Batt (1715-1796)
In the name of god amen, I Richard Batt of Weyhill in the county of Southampton
yeoman being willing and desirous to settle and dispose of my worldly Estates
and Effects in such manner that no disputes or controversies may arise touching
the same after my Decease Do therefore make publish and declare this my last
will and Testament in manner following that is to say First I will and order
that all my just debts and funeral Expenses shall be fully paid and satisfied
out of my Effect by my Executors herein after named within twelve months next
after my Decease Also I give and devise unto my sons John Batt and James Batt
and unto my daughter Mary Elizabeth the wife of Thomas Compton All that my freehold
messuage tenement or Cottage Garden and appurtances thereunto belonging situate
and being at Grately in the said County of Southampton To Hold unto them the
said John Batt James Batt and Mary Elizabeth Compton their Heirs and Assigns
for ever as Tenants in Common and not as joint Tenants And All the rest residue
and remainder of my Goods Rights Chattels Stock in the Funds ready money debts
Book Debts Bills Bonds Notes Specialities and other Securities for Money and
all my other Estate and Effects whatsoever and wheresoever and of what Nature
and Kind soever I give devise and bequeath unto them the said John Batt James
Batt and Mary Elizabeth Compton To Hold to them the said John Batt James Batt
and Mary Elizabeth Compton their heirs Executors Administrators and Assigns
respectively for ever And Lastly I do hereby nominate constitute and appoint
them said John Batt and James Batt to be joint executors of this my will hereby
revoking and making void all former and other Will and Wills by me at any time
heretofore made and do declare this and no other to be my last will and testament

which do not amount to the sum of two hundred as they verily believe.

Will of Ann Roberts Bays (d.1851)
In the name of God Amen,
I Ann Roberts Bays of no 13 Great Alie Street in the parish of Saint Mary, Whitechapel in the county of Middlesex being of sound mind, memory and understanding, praise to god for the saint so make this my last will and testament in the following manner and form principally and first of all I give and procurement (?) my soul into the hands of almighty god that gave it and my body resign to the earth and strive to be buried in a plain manner in the vault under the church in the parish of Saint Swithins, London Stone, Cannon Street, in the city of London. And I desire that all my just debts, the funeral expenses and the proving of this my last will and testament be in the first place paid and satisfied and concerning the rest of my worldly estates wherewith it has pleased a gracious profit to bless us with I give and dispose of the same in the following manner I that is to say I give and bequeath to my dear and only parent Mrs Mary Bays if she should be alive at the time of my death my silver plate if she should have a desire for the same and I likewise give to my said dear parent Mary Bays the ______ of my furniture and effects if she thinks fit to take any of the same and all the rest and remainder of my furniture and effects and all my goods mantels linen china wearing apparel ___ debts monies _______ for money and all the rest of my property of what nature or kind sown and whatsoever the same mayin at the time of my death all this give and bequeath to Catherine Sarah Webb for her sole use and benefit she being an orphan and placed under my care or Mr George _____ ______ her guardian. The said rest and residue goods mantels and property of what ever it may consist of at a time of my death is after to be sold and turned into money and the product thereof to be put out on interest for the benefit of the said Catherine Sarah Webb and the principle or probate thereof to be paid to her when she is twenty one years all at the direction of my executors herein at after named and I nominate rusticate and appoint my friends George __________ ________ of Little Alie Street, White Chapel of London Master Benjamin Cohen of Moore Lane, Stone Street, _____ _______ in the city of London and James Powell of Moore Lane, Stone St, aforesaid executors of this my last will and testament and so that each of them shall be answerable for his own art and deed and neither of them for the other of them _____ ______ and making void all and every other will or wills therefore by me made and do declare this to be my last will and testament for witness whereof I the said Ann Roberts Bays have hereunto set my hand and seal this 25th days of July in the year of our lord 1833 Ann R. Will of John Marsh (d.1741)
In the name of God Amen,
I John Marsh of the parish of Saint Martin in the fields in the county of Middlesex. Cheesemonger being of sound mind and memory and understanding do make and declare this my last will and testament as followeth first I commend my soul to god and my body to be ____ _____ interned at the discretion of my executors herein after named and _________ my worldly estate I give devise and bequeath the same in monies following that is to say I do and hereby give unto my dear and loving wife Ann Mary estate goods and chattels which I am now possess or in _____ unto and do hereby make nominate _____ and appoint their sole executors of this my last will and testament ____ being and making void all former wills by me made and I do declare this to be my last will and testament in witness hereof I the said John Marsh the testator have to this my last will and testament set my hand and seal this eighth day of January in the fifteenth year of the reign of our sovereign ______ King George the second and in the year of our lord one thousand seven hundred and forty one . This Will as proved at London on the Twenty Eighth day of January in the year of our lord One thousand Seven hundred and forty one before the worshipful Thomas Salisbury doctor of laws and surrogate of the right worshipful John Bettesworth doctor of laws master keeper of commissary of the prerogative court of Canterbury lawfully constituted by the oath of Ann Mary widow the _____ of the deceased and sole beneficiary named in the said will to whom administration was granted of all and singular the goods chattels and credits of the said deceased she being first sworn well and duly to administer the same.
